DIY: Mother's Day Gifts

By Dillon Wallace

Your mom is the first woman you ever loved. She sacrificed a lot of time, effort and endured some intense pain to bring you into this world. So the least you can do is step up your gift-giving game for one day to honor her, right?

We’re not talking boxes of chocolates or bouquets of flowers. Those are nice and all, but c’mon … been there done that. No, this Mother’s Day, it’s time to dig deep and give from the heart with a DIY gift that she’ll not only love but appreciate the time, effort and some of the pain you may have gone through to make it. Just like when she made you.

Wooden Beaded coasters

One of the surest ways to a mother’s heart is to give a gift that’s not only thoughtful, but functional. How many times did you hear, “don’t stain the table. Use a coaster” as a kid? Probably more times than you  can remember, that’s how many. It’s also what makes this gift perfect. These wooden bead coasters are great for entertaining guests and require a minimal amount of supplies and tools. You’re mom will not only love the finished product, but she’ll know that she taught you well, and that’s a gift that’s priceless.

Pounded Flower Towel or Tote

Remember that whole thoughtful and functional talk we just had? Well, here’s another one for you. Why give boring old flowers that will wilt when you can give the practical gift of flowers with this pounded flower towel or tote. It may look like paint but it ain’t. The beautiful floral design is created by pouding real flowers into the towel or tote bag, which can then be used to clean or hang on the oven like her other decorative towels. You know exactly what we’re talking about. Those towels that are meant for show, not use. Or it can become her new summer go-to tote bag for running errands on the weekends.

Citrus Lip Balm

Mother’s Day is obviously closer to summer than winter, but that doesn’t mean your mom’s lips don’t get chapped. With this DIY citrus lip balm, you can ensure that her face puckers stay hydrated and photo ready for any occasion. Plus, it just tastes so refreshing. Who knows, she might love it so much that she’ll never go back to her trusted Carmex or Burt’s Beeswax lip balm ever again. We’ll consider that a win!

Geode Wine Stoppers

Being a mom ain’t easy. Sometimes, she’s got to settle down after a long day with a glass of wine in hand. Depending on the day, maybe a bottle. That’s were these DIY geode wine stoppers come in handy, literally. Help you mom add a little flair to her wine collection with these radiant rock pieces. They’re easy to make and beautiful to look at while she throws one back!

Leather Keychain

What could be more appropriate for Mother’s Day than a personally engraved heart-shaped leather keychain for mom to sport around town? It can be as simple as “Happy Mother’s Day” or as deep as you want it to be. Maybe even an inside joke that the two of you adorably share? One thing is for certain, your mom will always think of you every time she grabs her keys … and for anyone taking tabs, that’s a lot of times.

Digitized film

Mothers love pictures of their children. Something that constantly reminds them of the beautiful humans they brought into this world and raised. But why stop at just simply printing and framing a picture of you and your siblings? Go the extra mile and get your old photos, VHS, film reels and more digitized to a DVD, thumb drive or cloud download. Sharing the good ol’ days in a new up-to-date format that she can watch whenever, wherever at her leisure truly is the gift that keeps on giving.

This Mother’s Day, ditch the traditional candies and flowers, and go for something a little more personal. Something a little more from the heart. Trust us, she’ll love it more than you’ll ever know.
