Spring Getaway: 10 Best Places to Visit this year

By Christian Roemer

After winter ends and everyone emerges from their homes, spring beckons for folks to get out and travel. Some places are definitely better than others during this flowering time of year. Whether the weather doesn’t cooperate or the crowds are just too unbearable, there are undoubtedly some places to avoid.

But there are also some really awesome places to go.

Whether you’re looking to stay domestic or travel abroad, here are 10 awesome spring destinations to put on your bucket list.

  1. Tokyo - Covered in Cherry Blossoms, there’s probably no better time of year to experience the cultural wonderland in Japan. The world’s most populous city, there’s no shortage of things to do, and people are really friendly. The food is awesome. Tokyo’s just a great city that should be on your list to visit anyway, but spring is the best time to go, by far.

  2. Croatia - Are you a fan of Game of Thrones? Did you know that they film all of the King’s Landing scenes in Croatia? Not only is it outstandingly beautiful with its rocky coasts and sapphire waters, but the people are truly friendly too. It’s also cheaper than most other European destinations.

  3. Mallorca, Spain - Sometimes called the Panama City Beach of Europe for Germans, Mallorca is an amazing place. Sandy cliffs jut out of the Mediterranean, creating dramatic landscapes that few places can rival. It’s definitely a tourist spot, so be prepared to run into lots of people--probably mostly German.

  4. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - One of the world’s cultural heritage sites, Rio is incredible. Giant, monolithic granite domes tower over the ocean. CopaCabana Beach is chaos, but awesome, and the nightlife is endless. Spring is a great time to experience one of the world’s greatest cities.

  5. Bangkok, Thailand - Thailand is a relatively inexpensive, yet beautiful, place to visit any time of the year. Spring takes a bit of the bite out of their sometimes sweltering temperatures. Thai people are almost weirdly friendly, the food is incredible, and the culture is something special to behold.

  6. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee - If you’ve never been to the Smokies, spring is by far the best time to go. The temperatures are perfect for hiking, the rivers are amply full of water, and the wildflowers bloom on these ancient hills. There’s a reason that this park is the country’s most widely visited national park, and spring is definitely the best time to go.
  7. Madagascar - If you’ve ever wanted to visit Madagascar, April is when the hot summer months start to wane and cooler temperatures start replacing the rain. There are some truly magnificent places to visit on this African island. The Baobabs look like they’re from a different planet. Lemurs are indigenous to the island. Mountains dot the landscape. Pristine beaches open into the Indian Ocean. What a cool place.

  8. Washington D.C. - Tokyo isn’t the only place that has world famous cherry blossoms. Washington D.C. also has them--and they’ve got bunches of them. Because of that, there’s probably no better time of the year to visit America’s capital. The cherry blossoms transform the city into a beautiful kaleidoscope of color, and the weather makes it perfect to discover all of the town’s landmarks and famous buildings by foot.

  9. Ha Long Bay, Vietnam - One of the most tranquil and otherworldly places on the earth, Ha Long Bay is what paradise looks like. Spending a week on a boat, coasting on its emerald green waters is what dreams are made of.

  10. Amsterdam, Netherlands - While you hardly need a real excuse to visit this classic European city, spring is the time to go. April is when tulips are at their brightest, making this vibrant city even more colorful. We won’t mention those certain colorful districts, but if it’s your cup of tea...

If you’re not psyched about getting out to one of these gorgeous places, you probably just don’t like to travel. Wherever you decide to go, make sure you take plenty of pictures. I want to see them when you get back!
